    Backpacking Favorites - Rachel Schack

    My favorite essentials for backpacking

Rachel Schack's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • REI Co-op Women's Flash 55 Pack Green S by REI Co-op — The Women's REI Flash 55 backpack is a budget friendly option for a no-frills lightweight backpacking backpack. I love the roll-top feature that allows me to overstuff when needed, like when I decide that I want to carry a package of bakery muffins with me 😂. There is just the right amount of pockets and straps. Not too much. I'm a fan of the pockets on the waist strap, but the modular design allows you to remove these if you'd like. Fits well and has simple adjustments to dial in the fit as needed for various body types.
    • HydraPak Flux 1.5 L Collapsible Water Bottle + Filter Cap - 50 fl. oz. by HydraPak — I prefer this water filter over other squeeze filters because the squeeze bottle is heavy duty silicon rather than the plastic that is found on another well known filter. I like a squeeze filter over a pump filter or gravity filter because there is a lot more mechanism to fail on a pump filter and the gravity filters can take a while. The squeeze filter is quick and you can also just fill the reservoir and do the squeezing later on or drink straight from the filter as needed.
    • Cleanwaste The Original WAG BAG - GO Anywhere Toilet Kit Waste Bags - Package of 12 by Cleanwaste — Always important to have wag bags with you no matter where you are. These wag bags come with the essentials you need to get this task completed appropriately.
    • Matador Blackout Travel Pillow Black by Matador — Love this pillow. It is so versatile. Useful both for backpacking and plane and car rides which means you can eliminate an extra item and use it for both on your trips. It is super easy to inflate. It has an adjustable strap in the front to cinch up or down depending on how tight you want it around your neck. I've found that for sleeping on my back while backpacking, I actually like to turn the pillow the other way so it is not wrapped around my neck but my head is resting in the hollow part and the inflated back of the pillow is under my neck. This packs down so small and I just store it in the same bag as my sleeping pad or bag. It also has a handy little pocket on the pillow cover that I usually put my earplugs in. The cover is also removable and washable.
    • Adventure Ready Compressed Towelettes Refill - Package of 20 by Adventure Ready — These compressed toilet paper tablets are the way to go in my opinion. A small bit of water and they expand to a decent sized absorbent towel that can be used for lots of different things.
    • PEAK REFUEL Breakfast Skillet - 2 Servings by PEAK REFUEL — A yummy high protein meal that actually tastes good and even has some vegetables.
