Dirt Run Essentials - Mary Tyler

Stuff I rely on to get the job done.

Mary Tyler's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • HYPERLYTE H1C by Hyperlyte — After trying a lot of different drink mixes, this is the one that stuck. A super easy way to get extra carbs and sodium on board between gels/food - no flavor fatigue since it's just mildly sweet, and doesn't upset my stomach. I take one bottle of this on all my long runs and know that my fueling is gonna be locked in.
    • Crest 6 by Tantrums — This thing fits like a glove. No bounce means no significant chafing, and it holds HELLA supplies. Love the ease of use and lightweight feel. Once it's on you can just enjoy the run!
    • SiS Beta Fuel Gel by The Feed — The GOAT gel. Delicious, 40g carb rocket fuel, with enough sodium to replenish without getting thirsty. I legit look forward to eating these.
    • Carbs Fuel Original Energy Gel by The Feed — 50g for diabolical efforts - love that it makes it easier to get 100g/hr. I use all the variations for variety and based on how I'm feeling. The caffeinated version packs 100mg of caffeine, which is just enough to put a pep in your step without pushing your heart rate over the edge.
    • Women's Tahoma Half Tight by Terignota — Light as air - these disappear on your body. Some nice pockets and grippy leg openings so they don't ride up. If you're between sizes, go down for a more compression fit, up for a slightly more relaxed (but still tight) fit. Bonus: for those with thighs that touch, these don't make any sound (IYKYK).
    • Salomon Quiver by Backcountry — Almost too good to be true - no bouncing, no rattling, no nothing. Super easy to use. Poles go in and come out with no issues and no messing around. Literally in love. This is compatible with the Tantrums vest!
    • Sutro Lite Prizm Sunglasses by Oakley — I mean, these are sunglasses, but they are very light, don't bounce around on your face or your head, and cover your whole field of vision. No peeling finishes like some other sunglasses when they are repeatedly exposed to water and sunscreen. The real deal.
    • APEX 4 by COROS — I chose Coros because the app interface is extremely intuitive, easy to use, and comes with a lot of great features. Not as "connected" as some other brands, but I like not having a supercomputer strapped to my arm all day. Love the realtime maps and navigation, and the battery life is superior. It also charges incredibly fast just in case you are in a pinch. All the features you really need and none of the ones you don't.

  1. Velocity™ 1.5L by HydraPak — I use this in the Tantrums vest on my unsupported long runs. The flow valve makes it easy to control how fast you're sipping. Most important, it's very easy to clean!
  2. H1 by Mount to Coast — These are super comfy! I sized up one half size to accommodate foot swelling and slightly wider feet and have had no issues with blisters or hot spots. The dual lacing system makes it easy to get a great fit - sometimes conventional lacing makes it hard to get a good lockdown without lace bite. These are great for California carpet, but don't have the grippiest outsole, so maybe best for non-technical trails.
  3. DROP KIT PRO I Crew Drop One Bag + Roll Drop Organizer by SILO — I use this as my gym bag and gear hauler literally every day. The best features are the shoe compartment and the amazing number of inner pockets for organizing. The removable pouches in the roll are super clutch for organizing toiletries, gels, tech/cables, etc. So much space! The only thing that could make this better are backpack straps, but no idea how that would affect the durability of the bottom of the bag.
  4. UPF Deflector 2.0 by rabbit — Used this during the hottest of hot summer days in the Bay Area and felt great! I'm pretty sun- and heat-sensitive, so really wanted something to keep the rays off and the heat out. Wicks moisture very well and doesn't feel clingy. Excellent product for peace of mind on sunny days.
  5. OpenRun Pro 2 by Shokz — These are so great for outdoor runs - as a woman running on my own, I am trying to stay aware of my surroundings at all times. These keep the music and podcasts going while allowing me to hear basically everything around me. These have also never hurt my head like other headphones that sit on top of your ears. Long battery life, fast charging, intuitive use. Bonus: excellent customer service. At one point, one of the buttons stopped working and they sent me a new pair right away. OpenSwim Pro has mp3 storage capabilities if you want to ditch the phone on your run!
  6. SoftFlask™ 250ml 2-Pack by HydraPak — I use these with the gel nozzle for long unsupported runs. You can fit four 40g gels in one of these babies, which eliminates a lot of frustration fumbling with sweaty/sunscreen hands (some gels are so hard to open!) and kept trash out of your pockets. Also great for small amounts of water on mid-length runs. The locking caps are awesome.
  7. Drink Tube Cap - 42mm by HydraPak — These let me use my front pack bottles without craning my neck - They stow nicely out of the way in the Tantrums vest. It's not much, but after 4 hours of bending your neck to drink water, it's the little things.
  8. Women's Trail Tee by Terignota — I have this tee in 4 colors and 2 sizes (small and medium). Both sizes fit perfectly somehow - magical. These are super lightweight with no annoying seams or tags, and I know when I have one on I am not going to be pulling or adjusting my top (literally a nightmare). Honestly will be buying more of these. Black perhaps for formal events.
  9. Shorthorn Socks by Terignota — I love**** these socks. They are exactly comparable to much more expensive brands in my opinion. They come in cute colors, they aren't too tight (just tight enough), and are a good length for dirt runs. The only new socks I will ever buy again.
  10. 500ml Locking-Cap Soft Flask by Terignota — I have two of these - they are a standard hydrapak soft flask with a locking cap (super clutch). The best deal around and a perfect size for mid-length efforts or a half-strength Hyperlyte.
  11. Women of the Wasatch x Crest Cap by Terignota — I mean this is the cutest hat, come on.
  12. LEKI Ultratrail FX.ONE | NORDIC WALKING POLES by Leki — These are responsible for a lot of my Strava segment PRs. They are super easy to set up and breakdown (setup can be a little tricky if you're covered in sunscreen like I am, but not hard). They are also *incredibly* light. Unbelievably light. Will be using them for a mountainous 50k coming up!
  13. ACG Zegama Trail Running Shoe - Women's by Nike — My daily trail shoe - these are very well-cushioned and SUPER grippy. I feel comfy after a long time just jogging downhill, which I can't say for a lot of peppier racing shoes. I ordered a half-size up to accommodate extra swelling and slightly wider feet and have had none of the issues that I typically run into with Nike's narrower toe box reputation (can't speak to TTS fit as I ordered online). Hot take but I love the built-in lil sock thing.
