Mental Recovery Essentials - Kristen Schindler
This is a collection of tools, products, books, and practices I recommend to athletes not for performance optimization alone, but for mental recovery, nervous system support, and sustainable high performance. Endurance sport asks a lot of people physically and psychologically. These are the things I’ve found genuinely helpful for reducing friction, supporting recovery, and helping athletes stay connected to themselves through hard training, big goals, burnout, transition, and everyday life.

- Oura Ring by Oura — As endurance athletes, we obsess over mileage, intervals, Strava kudos, and pushing our limits. But in that pursuit, it’s really easy to overlook mental recovery, quietly accumulating fatigue that affects motivation, focus, and long-term resilience.
I've found the Oura Ring to be one of the most effective tools for addressing this. It passively tracks key markers like HRV, resting heart rate, sleep quality, and body temperature while we rest, then delivers a clear daily Readiness Score that reflects how well our nervous system has recovered, which gives us an honest, data-driven picture instead of relying on how we feel (can't always trust that). It helps us recognize when we need to prioritize rest, adjust training load, and protect our mental freshness before burnout sets in.
- Waking Up Meditation App by Waking Up — While physical recovery gets most of our attention... true sustainability requires mental recovery, too. Clarity, emotional resilience, and the ability to stay present under stress.
The Waking Up app by Sam Harris is an outstanding tool for this. It offers a thoughtful, no-nonsense approach to meditation and mindfulness that goes beyond basic relaxation and the coolest part of the app is that it's scaleable.
- Hyperice Normatec Elite by The Feed — There isn’t strong scientific research showing that Normatec significantly improves objective physical recovery markers or performance in endurance athletes. However, many of us find that it feels really good — it reduces perceived soreness, helps the legs feel lighter and fresher, and creates a nice ritual of active relaxation after hard sessions.
That subjective benefit matters. In a sport where mental recovery and staying motivated are just as important as the physical side, a tool that helps us unwind, feel taken care of, and mentally reset can support overall sustainability.
