    Rock Climbing - Joe Kalis

The gear I swear by for sport and trad climbing!

Joe Kalis's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • Men's Solution Guide Harness by Black Diamond — My personal all-around harness for ice, trad, and alpine routes. Carries a lot of gear and carries it well! Adjustable to fit over whatever layers are needed on an outing.
    • Cuesta Adjust M's by Blue Ice — My dedicated sport climbing harness - great balance of light weight durability and comfort.
    • Mach Express Dyneema Alpine Quickdraw - 4 Pack by CAMP USA — My go-to alpine draws. For trad and alpine climbing I like the Nano 22 carabiner for the gear side and the Photon for the rope side.
    • Photon Express KS Quickdraw - 6-Pack by CAMP USA — My preferred sport climbing quickdraws! Solid gate for the bolt side, wire gate for the rope side.
    • TC Pro by La Sportiva — My all-around trad and crack climbing shoe. Updated version of the original OG TC Pro, the fabled "Air Tommies". The combination of crack prowess and protection, stiff sole, and edging rubber has kept me coming back for resole after resole, pair after pair.
    • C4 Camalot by Black Diamond — The tried and true and refined trad classic. Ubiquitous, durable, dependable without being flashy.
    • Camalot™ Z4 by Black Diamond — My preferred small cam due to the flexible stem and consistent sizing. I haven't had any issues with trigger wire durability but do my best to not fall on small gear.
    • Peenut Set No. 1-5 by DMM — If you're going to place nuts, you need offsets. And if you have offsets, why not small ones too?
    • Alloy Offset Set #7-11 by DMM — I place at least one of these on every single route. They just work! My favorite? The #11 large blue offset.
    • Wallnut Set by DMM — I carry a full range of these, but will mix and match with the Peenuts and Offsets. The curved shape, hollow interior, and "scoop" on the largest face have been a great mix of lighter weight with durability and security.
    • Totem Cam by Totem Cams — For when the gear is small. Or small and tenuous. Or small, tenuous, and you appreciate the finest in engineering.
    • Grigri Belay Device by Petzl — The workhorse assisted braking device. You'll find them everywhere for good reason! Multiple applications for cragging, sport climbing, rescue situations. I prefer mine for all of the above.

  1. Giga Jul Belay Device by Edelrid — A tube-style plaquette belay device with assisted braking features? What will those German engineers at Edelrid think of next? I usually carry this in tandem with my Grigri for sport and cragging applications, but use it as a solo device for trad multipitch, alpine, and ice missions.
