    Who it's for
Runners who train in the dark—especially on technical trails or in climates that push workouts to early morning or late evening—and who want better terrain visibility than a headlamp alone provides. Works as a standalone light or as part of a waist-plus-headlamp combo.
    What people are saying
Hosts consistently praise the no-bounce fit, long battery life, good brightness, and USB-C quick charging. The recurring theme is that a waist-mounted beam creates depth and shadow that makes rocks, roots, and trail features far easier to read than a headlamp alone.
    Worth noting
Some models include a rear storage pouch for a phone, gels, or keys; others require it separately—check before buying. Notes are uniformly positive with no criticism or durability flags raised.

    Jeffrey Hammond's review

This is one of my favorite pieces of gear for running at night. While a headlamp is great for illuminating where you're looking, adding a waist light completely changes how well you can see the trail. I love pairing the Lumen 400Z with a headlamp because the waist-mounted beam lights up the ground and terrain directly in front of me, making rocks, roots, and trail features stand out much better. Meanwhile, my headlamp follows wherever I turn my head, giving me the best of both worlds. I've found this combination especially valuable on technical trails and remote overnight adventures where good visibility can make a huge difference in both confidence and safety. The waist light creates depth and shadows that help you read the trail more naturally, while the headlamp fills in everything else. When you're running through the middle of nowhere in the dark, having light coming from two different angles makes a noticeable difference. If you do a lot of night running, this is one of the upgrades I recommend most often.

Waist lights are better than headlamps. You heard it here first. Super comfortable, way better view of the terrain in front of you, and stays pointing forward as you move your head/body around. Never looking back.

I live in an extremely hot part of south Texas, so a lot of my outdoor workouts are done in the early morning or late evening when it's dark. I don't particularly care for head lamps, so I use waist lights. The Ultraspire waist lights are bright, durable, and adjustable, and I can see the road or trail in front of me much better than with a head lamp. The pouch on the back (either included or separate depending on the model you get) is great for your phone, gels, keys, or other small things. Don't leave home without it!
