My all-purpose list of great ski gear when cost is less important than performance

Greg McCandless's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • Crater Pro HS Hooded Jacket Men by Mammut — A Gore-Tex ski shell with top of the line waterproofing/breathability from my favorite technical ski apparel brand. Size up!
    • Mtn. Pro 2.0 3L GTX HS Hooded Jacket Men by Mammut — A resort ski jacket from Mammut with Gore-Tex!
    • Stoney HS Pants Men by Mammut — Classic ski shell pants from Mammut with 15k waterproofing and 20k breathability. Exterior waistband adjustment. Pleated pockets for extra volume (either for gear or simply for your thigh)!
    • Sender IN Hybrid Jacket Men by Mammut — An insulator layer for under a hardshell jacket that is also stylish on its own and prevents having two hoods like many insulator jackets (when paired with a shell).
    • Aconcagua ML Jacket Men by Mammut — A sporty performance fleece that is great as a midlayer with its athletic cut.
    • Tree Wool FL Longsleeve Men by Mammut — A technical/performance long sleeve tee for skiing that combines merino wool with lyocell (derived from wood!) to be fast drying, light, stretchy, and odor-fighting.
    • Mammut Neck Gaiter Logo by Mammut — A super stylish gaiter for spring skiing conditions (or for those who "run hot")
    • Aenergy Headband by Mammut — A spring skiing hat alternative!
    • Balaclava by Mammut — A well-sorted balaclava that is cut so you can cover your nose or not. Polartec stretch fleece.
    • Fleece Neck Gaiter by Mammut — A fleece neckwarmer made of recycled bottles!
    • Stoney HS Thermo Hooded Jacket Men by Mammut — Mammut's best seller - the insulated Stoney has 80g/m2 insulation, 20k/15k breathability/waterproofing, and all of the expected features (pass pocket on the sleeve, pit zips, adjustable hem, powder skirt, adjustable hood, plenty of internal and external pockets, and AquaGuard zippers).
    • Fall Line HS Thermo Pants Men by Mammut — Insulated ski pants without suspenders for a traditional look, an adjustable waist and relaxed fit for comfort, and standard 10k/10k waterproofing/breathability.
    • Stoney Glove by Mammut — Mammut took design elements from classic Hestra gloves here - a pre-curved design, premium goat leather palms, Primaloft Silver insulation, a 100% waterproof glove insert, microfleece lining, and both wrist leashes + glove connectors within a gauntlet style glove that isn't overly bulky.

  1. Trift Longsleeve Men by Mammut — A stylish, durable, and quick-drying insulating baselayer that doesn't give "long johns"
  2. Ski Alpine Knee Socks by Mammut — Thoughtfully designed ski socks with full sole cushioning, extra protection on the shin, and FLAT TOE SEAMS to prevent chafing! The best.
  3. Men's Objective Pro Jacket by Stio — Top of the line hardshell jacket from Stio with 3 layer Gore-Tex Pro, an adjustable hood, RFID pass pocket, plenty of pockets, and a perfect fit (not too baggy or slim).
  4. Men's Environ Jacket by Stio — A 3-layer, 20k waterproof, 10k breathability hardshell jacket with a removable hood. This, my friends, is a VERY rare find. Trust me - I spent days looking for one for myself!
  5. Men's Environ Bib by Stio — A great bib shell pant—which are tough to find—with 20k waterproofing and 10k breathability. These come in Regular and Short, too; I find that even with a 32" inseam, Short ski pants tend to be better all around just because if you are walking from the lot to the lift or around the house without ski boots, they don't catch under the heel.
  6. Men's Environ Pant by Stio — The non-bib shell pant from Stio with an adjustable and removable belt (there are also adjustable waistband tabs for a further customized fit). 20k waterproofing 10k breathability. These come in Short (30"), Regular (32"), and Long (34") inseam options!
  7. Men's Basis PeakWool Midweight Tight by Stio — A good looking baselayer that is a blend of PeakWool merino wool and TENCEL spandex/nylon. These are moisture wicking and warm at the same time, and are über soft.
  8. Men's Basis PeakWool Midweight Crew LS by Stio — A good looking baselayer that is a blend of PeakWool merino wool and TENCEL spandex/nylon. This is moisture wicking and warm at the same time, and is über soft. Also available in a lighter-weight option.
  9. Men's Pinion Down Sweater by Stio — One of the best hoodless puffer midlayers on the market - this has a DWR finish and AlliedFeather HyperDry water resistant down inside. It isn't too bulky, either, so you can use it alone as a Fall/Spring jacket around town with an athletic fit, but it actually fits inside a ski shell jacket without popping out of the sides or bottom, which is rare. Sizes range from XS so 3XL, too!
  10. Objective Insulated Mitt by Stio — A Gore-Tex ski mitt with removable leashes, PrimaLoft Gold insulation, a Gore-Tex insert, a suede nose wipe on the inside of the thumb, a full-grain leather palm, and a conductive leather index finger area for quick tech use when needed. Gauntlet style.
  11. Objective LP Insulated Glove by Stio — The non-gauntlet Gore-Tex glove option from Stio for those who prefer to fit their gloves underneath their shell cuffs (I do). These have Gore-Tex protection, full-grain leather palms, and a conductive index finger for tech when needed. I love the removable leash, though, and I wish more companies offered that!
  12. All-Mountain Midweight Ski Sock by Stio — A Merino/Nylon sock with a seamless toe - I own these! They are the warmest pair I own, so "midweight" really means "full warmth" here. There is also a lightweight version if you run hot!
  13. Lofoten GORE-TEX PRO Plus Jacket - Men's by Norrona — The top of the line Gore-Tex Pro ski shell with more pockets and vents than you can imagine. The unique hood design channels water away from goggles.
  14. Khroma Latok GTX Jacket - Men's by Rab — Rab's top of the line Gore Tex Pro ski shell. Has a RECCO reflector to add rescue searchability if you are extreme skiing/mountaineering~
  15. Lab GORE-TEX 3L Jacket - Men's by Flylow — One of the most stylish Gore-Tex shell jackets from the telemark-turned-newschool brand Flylow. I own the Quantum Pro shell that lacks Gore-Tex and love it!
  16. PowSlayer Jacket - Men's by Patagonia — Patagonia's Gore-Tex Pro 3L shell ski jacket that still packs all of the expected features into a more minimalist look.
  17. Lofoten GORE-TEX PRO Plus Pant - Men's by Norrona — Gore Tex Pro 3L shell pant with the most storage and vents on the market!
  18. PowSlayer Pant - Men's by Patagonia — Patagonia's Gore Tex Pro 3L shell pant - top of the line.
  19. Baker GORE-TEX 3L Bib Pant - Men's by Flylow — Flylow's industry classic Baker bibs - Gore Tex 3L shell bibs with a baggier fit for a newschool look.
  20. Khroma Latok GTX Bib - Men's by Rab — An athletic cut Gore Tex Pro shell bib with snap enclosures on the bottom hem to ensure a tight fit on top of ski boots.
  21. Army Leather GORE-TEX Glove - Men's by Hestra — The standard-bearer for ski gloves. The best glove from the best brand. Gore Tex to boot! Gauntlet style with goat leather palms. Note: these are not max warmth gloves - rather, a max craftsmanship glove with mid-level warmth. I own them!
  22. Army Leather GORE-TEX Mitten by Hestra — The standard-bearer for ski mittens. The best mitten from the best brand. Gore Tex to boot! Gauntlet style with goat leather palms. Note: these are not max warmth mittens - rather, a max craftsmanship mitten with mid-level warmth. I own the glove version!
  23. Fall Line Glove by Hestra — I own these - beautiful leather gloves from the best glove manufacturer in the world. The short-cuff style is great if you prefer to cinch your shells' cuffs around the bottom of your gloves (I do). These are not max-warmth gloves, but I find them perfect for every ski day from 25 degrees all the way up to 50.
  24. Hestra Gloves Ergo Grip Active Gloves by Hestra Gloves — I own these and they are my spring skiing gloves. They are not insulated, just a nice leather glove that can be used as a Fall/Spring or even driving glove. The Active Wool Terry version adds lightweight insulation if you are interested in a spring skiing glove that isn't leather only. I prefer these just because I "run hot!"
  25. USA Snow Lightweight OTC Sock by Wigwam — A US Ski & Snowboard Team edition of a classic ski sock from perhaps the most classic ski sock brand of all - Wigwam!
  26. Bergtagen Merino Headband by Fjallraven — Top of the line Merino headband from Fjallraven - I own the neck gaiter and it is super comfy.
  27. Tab Hat by Fjallraven — A warm and moisture wicking waffle knit beanie with lots of color options.
  28. Bergtagen Merino Neck Gaiter by Fjallraven — A high quality merino gaiter that is light and stretchy but warmer than you would expect. Does not trap moisture around the mouth like so many others!
  29. Ski Targeted Cushion Extra Stretch OTC Sock by Smartwool — The extra stretch edition of these over the calf ski socks is great for those with bigger calves!
  30. Microlight Down Jacket - Men's by Rab — A slim fit down puffer from Rab that fits nicely underneath any shell jacket and is stylish enough to wear on its own with nice contrasting zipper pulls.
  31. Ovik Lite Fleece 1/2-Zip Jacket - Men's by Fjallraven — Midlayers need to be stylish enough for apres and this 1/2 zip pullover fits the bill! Nice and soft, too, without overheating. A great spring skiing midlayer under a shell, too, with less bulk than a regular fleece.
  32. Arc'teryx Men's Sabre Jacket Black L by Arc'teryx — The most award-winning ski shell on that market! 3L Gore Tex, RECCO reflector, RFID pocket - everything you would expect from a high-end ski jacket. Also available in an insulated version.
  33. Arc'teryx Men's Rush Bib Pants Khaki S by Arc'teryx — I like the softshell top part of the bib more than the Sabre bibs, though those are available as well. Gore Tex Pro 3L shell pant in more of a suspender-pant style than the traditional super-high bib.
  34. Arc'teryx Fission SV Gloves Green L by Arc'teryx — The warmest glove from Arc'teryx - these have 133g/m2 insulation which bests the standard 80g/m2 of PrimaLoft most of the other top-end gloves have. If you tend to "run cold," these are the best of the best.
