Sage R8 Core 4WT 8'6"
“The Sage R8 Core 486-4 is my go-to rod for fishing smaller Colorado streams when I still want a little extra power in the tank. It’s incredibly light in hand and very accurate, making it ideal for placing dry flies and small nymphs to picky trout in tight water. At the same time, the fast-action R8 Core blank gives you enough backbone to cut through wind or reach across tricky currents when conditions aren’t perfect. It’s a great balance of finesse and power — delicate enough to protect light tippets, but strong enough to stay in control when the wind picks up or a good trout decides to run.”

Sage DART 3WT 7'6"
“The Sage Dart 376-3 is my favorite rod for true small-water trout fishing. At 7'6" and a 3-weight, it’s perfect for picking apart tight streams where you’re casting around boulders, under tree limbs, and into small pockets that hold surprisingly good trout. The rod loads quickly at short distances, which makes it incredibly accurate when you’re making quick, close casts in tight quarters. I usually pair this rod with the Scientific Anglers Creek line, and the combo is about as good as it gets for small-stream fishing. It loads easily, delivers delicate presentations, and gives you great feedback when fighting fish — making it an absolute blast on technical little creeks.”

Orvis Clearwater 5WT 9' Outfit
“The Orvis Clearwater 5wt 9' outfit is a versatile, higher-quality trout setup that performs well on everything from small streams to larger rivers. The medium-fast action provides better line control and casting distance than most starter kits, making it a great option for dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers. It comes fully rigged with a matched reel, weight-forward floating line, backing, and leader so you can get on the water immediately. Compared to entry-level kits like the Redington Wrangler or Orvis Encounter, the Clearwater uses a higher-quality rod blank and improved components, giving you smoother casting performance and better durability. It’s the kind of setup anglers can grow into rather than outgrow. Orvis also backs the rod with their 25-year warranty, which covers repairs or replacement for most damage, giving anglers long-term peace of mind that’s uncommon in many starter outfits.”

Sage R8 Core 7WT 9'
“The Sage Payload 789-4 is my go-to rod for bass when I’m fishing out of the kayak. It has plenty of backbone to throw big poppers, bulky streamers, or a sinking line when I’m targeting fish along banks, structure, or deeper water. The fast action and powerful tip make it easy to pick up heavy line and deliver larger flies without feeling like you’re working too hard. At 8'9", it’s also a great length for kayak fishing — short enough to manage fish close to the boat but still long enough to make solid casts and control line. If you’re throwing big flies for bass or other warmwater species, this rod has the power to do it comfortably all day.”

Lamson Litespeed M
“The Lamson Litespeed M is my favorite reel to pair with my Douglas Sky G 8wt when I’m chasing redfish along the Texas coast. It’s incredibly lightweight but still has plenty of power, which makes a big difference when you’re casting all day on the flats. The balance between strength and weight keeps the setup comfortable and responsive, even during long days of sight fishing. One thing I really like about this reel is how quickly it picks up line. When a redfish changes direction or starts running toward you, the high retrieve rate helps you stay tight to the fish and regain control quickly. The sealed hybrid drag system is smooth and powerful, and the IPX8 waterproof rating means it’s built to handle the saltwater environment without issue. Paired with the Sky G 8wt, the Litespeed M makes for a lightweight but incredibly capable setup that’s perfect for throwing flies to cruising redfish and handling those hard runs when one finally eats.”

Lamson Litespeed F
“The Lamson Litespeed F is the freshwater version of the Litespeed series and the reel I pair with my 7wt when targeting bass. Like the saltwater Litespeed M, it has an incredibly lightweight design that makes it comfortable to cast all day—something that really matters when you’re throwing bigger flies or poppers for hours at a time. While the large arbor gives the reel a fast retrieve rate, it’s not something you necessarily need for bass since their runs are usually short. Where this reel really shines is in its lightweight feel and smooth drag system, which keeps the entire setup balanced and easy to fish all day. If you’re chasing bass with a 7wt, the Litespeed F keeps the setup light, responsive, and fun to fish without sacrificing the durability Lamson reels are known for.”

Ross Animas
“The Ross Animas is one of those reels that just checks all the boxes for me. It looks great, it’s lightweight, and it’s built incredibly well. Ross redesigned the frame and spool with modern machining while keeping the durability and simplicity that made the original Animas such a guide favorite. Beyond the performance, I really appreciate that these reels are made in Colorado. They’re solid, dependable reels with a smooth composite drag system that handles a wide range of freshwater fishing situations without being overly complicated. I actually own more Ross Animas reels than any other model in my lineup, which probably says everything you need to know. They’re lightweight, reliable, and just flat-out good reels that I trust on the water. Ross backs them with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner, covering repair or replacement for defects for as long as the product remains in production.”

Ross Colorado
“The Ross Colorado is my go-to reel for my 3wt setups. It balances perfectly with lightweight rods and keeps the entire setup feeling light and responsive when fishing small streams. This reel uses a classic click-pawl drag system, which gives it that traditional sound and feel that a lot of trout anglers love. It’s simple, reliable, and perfect for the kind of small-water fishing where finesse matters more than stopping power. Ross did a great job blending classic design with modern engineering on this reel. The semi-caged frame adds strength while keeping the reel lightweight, and the open spool design keeps things clean while allowing line and backing to dry quickly. On top of that, it’s just a great-looking reel with the machined Colorado mountain silhouette on the back. For small-stream fishing with a 3wt, the Ross Colorado offers great balance, smooth performance, and that classic click-pawl sound that just makes trout fishing feel right.”

Ross Evolution LTX
“A step up from the Ross Animas and Colorado in my lineup is the Ross Evolution LTX. This reel takes everything Ross is known for—smooth performance, lightweight design, and great build quality—and pushes it a little further with a stronger drag and a more refined feel. The drag system on the LTX is significantly more powerful than previous Evolution reels while still maintaining the smooth sound and feel that trout anglers love. That extra power means it’s not just a great trout reel—it’s also capable of handling light saltwater species like redfish, bonefish, or snook if you decide to take it to the flats. Ross also designed the spool with a large arbor and a smart line channel that neatly hides arbor knots while helping distribute fly line evenly across the spool. Like the rest of the Ross lineup, the reel is incredibly lightweight but still feels solid and well built. If you’re looking for a premium reel that bridges the gap between freshwater trout fishing and light saltwater use, the Evolution LTX is a fantastic option and a noticeable step up in performance from the Animas and Colorado.”

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Infinity
“The Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Infinity is my favorite all-around fly line for cold-water fishing. I run this line on several of my rods from 4wt through 6wt because it’s incredibly versatile and performs well across a wide range of situations. It has enough power to turn over small streamers or heavier nymph rigs, but it still delivers delicate presentations when fishing dry flies. The longer head design also makes it easy to mend and control line on the water, which is especially helpful when fishing rivers. This is one of those lines that just does everything well. Whether I’m fishing trout on western rivers, targeting panfish, or throwing small flies in moving water, the Infinity loads rods nicely and gives me the control and performance I want throughout the day.”

RIO Creek
“he RIO Creek line is one of my favorite fly lines for small-stream fishing, and I primarily use it on my 3wt and 4wt rods. It’s specifically designed to load quickly at short distances, which makes it perfect for those tight creek situations where most casts are only 10–20 feet. This line pairs especially well with rods like my Sage Dart and Douglas Upstream. Those rods are built for close-range accuracy, and the Creek line helps them load effortlessly for quick, precise casts under branches, around rocks, and into small pockets where trout like to hide. It’s a great setup for technical small water—easy casting, delicate presentations, and just a really fun combination when you’re picking apart little creeks.”
