2026 - Trail Season Kit - Allen Au

The gear I’m rocking for trail runs and ultras.

Allen Au's expert gear recommendations on Rendezvu

    Products in this list

    • H1 by Mount to Coast — I am an absolute bitch for these shoes. Just make sure to heel-lock them and wear non-cotton socks. 500+ miles and 2 ultra's done in them.
    • Fractel Bucket Hat by Fractel — Great running bucket hat- just remember, if you hear a sound that feels like footsteps behind you or clacking, but can't figure out if its your shoe or gear or poles, its the hat's tightening knot.
    • A Unicorn's Calamity by Goodr — Cheap, pocketable sunglasses. That's all they are, no more, no less. Can stuff in pockets, just make sure not to actively scratch them or put them in pockets that scratch them.
    • Salomon Quiver by Backcountry — it's a pain in the ass to attach but it makes you feel like Legolas. For the bottom there's a string tie there annoying so I use the lightest caribener to attach it to my vest
    • Janji Men's Run All Day T-Shirt Blue S by Janji — The neck cut out is a lot larger than other race-tshirts, similar to a singlet cut out. So wear some neck protection or sunscreen!
    • Salomon Adv Skin 12 Hydration Vest Black S by Salomon — When you want no compromises on storage, but are willing for a slightly hotter (due to heat) ride, this is it!
    • Forerunner® 965 by Garmin — You are only getting this watch because you wanted GPS and Battery. You aren't getting it because its a smart-watch with fitness tracking or UI. You are truly getting it because of its performance as a reliable, long lasting, piece of hardware and you've accepted software experience isn't key. That said I love having 2 weeks+ of batteries, and never charging it in an ultra distance run.
    • Janji Men's 2-in-1 Multi Shorts 7" Black S by Janji — Do not wear this when it's humid, or you will chafe! It's definitely a short that takes a while getting used to, but it can sure carry a lot! Including fullsize 600ml water bottles in the side pockets on the liner. Should you do that? Depends on you.
    • Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Trekking Poles - Pair Gray 115 Cm by Black Diamond — I think I'm annoyed that at the "lightest possible poles that perform well" tier, there's only this color wave and the red Leki ones. So at this point, choose the one you jive with.
    • M's Sunchaser 50 Hooded Long Sleeve by Janji — I'm between sizes, and usually I'd go for "the bigger size". Given the goal of this shirt is to actually get your sweat on your skin so that when the breeze hits you, you get extra cooling, I'd recommend a tighter fit.

  1. BITR H1 by Mount to Coast
  2. M1 by Mount to Coast
  3. DJI Osmo Nano by DJI — This is what I vlog my runs in, capturing some easy clips. I attach it as a clip to my hat, or magnetic mount to my vest for easy storage.
  4. Moab Arm Sleeve by Path Projects — Extremely useful to carry if you wear just a short-sleeve T-shirt, great for those UV exposed dates.
  5. REI Co-op Men's Sahara Shade Regular-Fit Hoodie by REI Co-op
  6. SOFT FLASK 500ml/17oz 42 by Salomon — That's what fits in my vest.
  7. Maurten Gel 160 Hydrogen Sports Fuel - 1 Packet by Maurten — Get this because you want a more "jello" texture.
  8. Tadej Secret Gel by The Feed — Get the mango flavor if you want a true reward during the hardest efforts. It's similar to Precision Fuel texture, but better flavor.
  9. Precision Fuel and Hydration Chews by The Feed — The chews are tiny but more importantly, they are chewable! Similar to a vietnamese dessert actually, or a more firm Mochi.
  10. LF 2L by Raide Research — When you don't want to run in a vest, this is great. I've done 25ks, 50ks, and 60ks in it, and can probably do a 50M if I have drop bags for other stuff. I've even ran with a raincoat and poles stuffed in it.
  11. SoftFlask™ 150ml 2-Pack by HydraPak — At some point you get cheap and want to DIY the fuel. I have done full on Honey, Maplesyrup, Maltodextrin+fructose mixes, you name it! Just make sure to carry water to chase it. You will rarely find this size in stores.
  12. PocketFlask™ 500ml by HydraPak — Smaller nozzle, but can fit side pockets of compression pants.
  13. REI Co-op Men's Rainier Rain Jacket Red S by REI Co-op — Get it on sale - around $40-50. Can "pack into itself" like a stuffsack and fit in a vest, or fit in a Raide 2L belt. Also if you do run with a vest, you want the jacket to be sized enough to cover your vest too. Because that's when you used it during a run.
  14. Buff CoolNet UV+ Half Multifunctional Headband Purple by Buff — If you sweat a lot, I find wearing this on my hat or neck helps redirect sweat from the rest of my gear into a concentrated fabric. I mean, it kinda helps.
  15. Nomadix Ice Bandana Black by Nomadix — Truly you are getting this because you fear the heat. Do it. I run 90F days in it.
  16. Tailwind Endurance Fuel by The Feed — I'm a hoe for tailwind.
  17. C30 Energy Gel Discovery Pack 8CT by Neversecond
